What men want

 PxHere

When you're born a man, it comes with expectations.

There's an outlook that's been passed down the generations.

And make no mistake, I can take charge when needed.

But as a result sometimes I feel my needs go unheeded.

They never tell you is how tiring "being strong" can be.

It's enough to drive me nuts, to want to pack up and flee.

And it's not like the people in my life do not care.

But despite all their efforts, it's still so much to bear.

As a result, i find myself with a single modest desire.

To find someone to hold me, to be wanted by her.

A spontaneous embrace, a loving kiss on my cheek.

I want a chance to not be a man, but just to be meek.

Of course there are other things to which I fantasize.

But as far as I'm concerned, it's the care that's the prize.

To have may hair stroked and be told it's okay.

To have that for myself, no price I wouldn't pay.

This, deep down, is something so many men want.

Someone to take charge, not a trophy to flaunt.

It's hard to live with, to see no future but toil.

To say men need no care throws my soul into turmoil.

And for that I seek a someone of aggressive flirtation.

Yet nonetheless is fond of caring, gentle domination.

I fully recognize in truth that I am owed no such thing.

But I can still hope, even if it ends up no more than a fling.

I do not wish to sound needy, to guilt you or such.

I am just venting my want for a soft, gentle touch...

A Man and a Woman Arguing

Giver

One night in the desert
a poor Bedouin woman has this to say
to her husband,
“Everyone is happy
and prosperous, except us! We have no bread.
We have no spices. We have no water jug.
We barely have any clothes. No blankets

for the night. We fantasize that the full moon
is a cake. We reach for it! We’re an embarrassment
even to the beggars. Everyone avoids us.

Arab men are supposed to be generous warriors,
but look at you, stumbling around! If some guest
were to come to us, we’d steal his rags
when he fell asleep. Who is your guide
that leads you to this? We can’t even get
a handful of lentils! Ten years’ worth
of nothing, that’s what we are!”
She went on and on.
“If God is abundant, we must be following
an imposter. Who’s leading us? Some fake,
that always says, Tomorrow, illumination
will bring you treasure, tomorrow.

As everyone knows, that never comes.
Though I guess, it happens very rarely, sometimes,
that a disciple following an imposter can somehow
surpass the pretender. But still I want to know
what this deprivation says about us.”
The husband replied, finally,
“How long will you complain
about money and our prospects for money? The torrent
of our life has mostly gone by. Don’t worry about
transient things. Think how the animals live.

The dove on the branch giving thanks.
The glorious singing of the nightingale.
The gnat. The elephant. Every living thing
trusts in God for its nourishment.

These pains that you feel are messengers.
Listen to them. Turn them to sweetness. The night
is almost over. You were young once, and content.
Now you think about money all the time.

You used to be that money. You were a healthy vine.
Now you’re a rotten fruit. You ought to be growing
sweeter and sweeter, but you’re gone bad.
As my wife, you should be equal to me.
Like a pair of boots, if one is too tight,
the pair is of no use.

Like two folding doors, we can’t be mismatched.
A lion does not mate with a wolf.”
So this man who was happily poor
scolded his wife until daybreak,
when she responded,
“Don’t talk to me
about your high station! Look how you act!
Spiritual arrogance is the ugliest of all things.
It’s like a day that’s cold and snowy,
and your clothes are wet too!

It’s too much to bear!
And don’t call me your mate, you fraud!
You scramble after scraps of bone
with the dogs.

You’re not as satisfied as you pretend!
You’re the snake and the snake charmer
at the same time, but you don’t know it.
You’re charming a snake for money,
and the snake is charming you.

You talk about God a lot, and you make me feel guilty
by using that word. You better watch out!
That word will poison you, if you use it
to have power over me.”
So the rough volume of her talking
fell on the husband, and he fought back,
“Woman,
this poverty is my deepest joy.
This bare way of life is honest and beautiful.
We can hide nothing when we’re like this.
You say I’m really arrogant and greedy,
and you say I’m a snake charmer and a snake,
but those nicknames are for you.

In your anger and your wantings
you see those qualities in me.
I want nothing from this world.

You’re like a child that has turned round and round,
and now you think the house is turning.

It’s your eyes that see wrong. Be patient,
and you’ll see the blessings and the lord’s light
in how we live.”
This argument continued
throughout the day, and even longer.

A night full of talking that hurts,
my worst held-back secrets. Everything
has to do with loving and not loving.
This night will pass.
Then we have work to do.

Tudo à minha volta

Guilherme Veloso

As filhas falam, barulhentas e reais,

E, no entanto, alguém fala enquanto fujo,
e falo do que, em mim, foge.

Sem que palavras alguma coisa é real?
As filhas sabem-no não o sabendo
e falam alto fora de mim
sem falarem nem não falarem.

Em mim tudo é em alguém
em qualquer sítio escuro
como se houvesse um muro
entre o que fala (quem?)

Where Many Rivers Meet

Iceland's Fjallsjökull Glacier

All the water below me came from above.
All the clouds living in the mountains
gave it to the rivers
who gave it to the sea, which was their dying.
?
And so I float on cloud become water,
central sea surrounded by white mountains,
the water salt, once fresh,
clouds fall and streams rush, tree root and tide bank
leading to the rivers' mouths
and the mouths of the rivers sing into the sea,
the stories buried in the mountains
give out into the sea
and the sea remembers
and sings back
from the depth
where nothing is forgotten

matéria alquímica

A paisagem move-se no poder
da observação. As coisas
parecem recusar os seus nomes,
não estão contentes.
Então é necessário recomeçar o mundo.

Mordo o pão gelado pela estação
e penso na minha condição imóvel.
O sol atinge-me como uma pedra
que subitamente viesse
esmagar o coração.

A dor é uma poderosa matéria alquímica.

A paisagem abre-se mais e mais
no meu sangue. Por vezes
paro diante da enorme cascata.
Haverá um qualquer lugar
por trás dessas águas pesadas.
Uma região intocada.

Estudo a forma como uma palavra germina.

De novo as coisas na paisagem
lançam-se a protestar. As palavras
são como pregos. É preciso arrancá-las
quando a ferrugem ameaça.
É preciso espreitar consecutivamente
o mundo.

Não há ponte entre duas margens,
só quem habita a corrente
pode aspirar a todas as moradas.

muito pouca

Bruno Guerreiro

Fera Oculta

 I

e nunca o futuro teve o sabor

for o alimento oportuno
nalguma noite desesperada
partilhando o sal de tudo largar
esse gosto tão raro
tão sigilosamente próximo

Perdoa a falta de graça
o tom melancólico a guerra
mas é que vivo numa época
que como muitas antes dela
repetiu os subsídios ao nojo
bateu o sangue em castelo
para se levar ao forno da ambição
deu uma sova às pequenas respirações
— sim, intersticiais, subtis, difíceis —
sem as quais um corpo é apenas
um estorvo à sua própria morte
percebes isso?
um estorvo à sua própria morte

Porque essas finuras de que te falo
são sem dúvida a única ousadia
frente à inevitável conflagração do espaço
oceano

Se a eternidade fosse um espelho
o que mostraria?
Isto agora porque é aqui
que vive a luz e é esta a paisagem
que nenhum deus pode apagar
senão à custa da sua fome
não receies por isso deus nenhum
nem eternidade nenhuma
a tua carne é o único tesouro
— sei-o enquanto nadas —
digno de ser embrulhado pela treva

II

as apostas circundantes

Gostaria no entanto de te receber
num outro lugar
não neste boi tombado
que dá pelo nome de vinte e um
peso morto arrastado pelos cornos
apenas para que não o devassem
as moscas

e a sorte sai conforme

no teu elemento
o limiar do cinismo
a angústia do salão espelhado
a tua mãe

III

Os momentos em que a claridade
é um capricho dos eléctricos
e os corpos se demoram nas praças
como se de fato houvesse alma
e devêssemos salva-la
da crueldade e do tédio
são esses os momentos que te desejo
nalguma cidade futura
nalguma encruzilhada de gente
mas sobretudo que haja eléctricos ainda
pois é à janela levantada
de um eléctrico
que a realidade é premente
e o vento toda história do mundo.

Vem isto a propósito
do cansaço em que ando
e que nada tem a ver com a matéria
da existência
– da qual és ainda magma –
antes com este logro quotidiano
em que um homem e uma mulher
se esfalfam para manter à tona
a ampulheta instável dos seus nomes
quando esse punhado de areia
subtraído à erosão dos deuses
merecia o sopro pleno
de um dia sem rodeios
um batismo mais vasto e súbito
que não prendesse cada coisa
aos seus próprios pés

Se algo tiveres absolutamente de fazer
que seja a travessia
das cerradas cordilheiras interiores
em que acabarás por tropeçar
não que sejas empurrado para lá
mas porque vivem numa espécie
de maturação do sangue
que mais do que a pretensa inclinação
dos teus músculos
deverás escutar
os animais noturnos as febres
a tua solidão pactuada
com a longínqua saga
dos que se despenham
em busca de um estrondo musical
pequeníssima nota reverberada
entre pálpebras
que só os escafandristas
puxam para a altura do olhar

Ter dos teus lábios essa sílaba nítida
de língua nenhuma
mera articulação de uma água antiga
que me pende sobre a cabeça
essa a espada que me falta
e que me permitirá afugentar
a angústia da pouca vida
que sempre nos pertence
recuando aos vocábulos indefesos
com que a paisagem
nos entra pela garganta
e nos alaga os pulmões

Ninguém sabe ao certo
com que esmero será capaz de arrombar
a frágil película das horas
e pilhar esses instantes de fraternidade
com o espanto de existir
porque é verdadeiramente digno de pasmo
que uma coisa se precipite
contra a lápide da sua própria duração
e se ache na veleidade de dizer
que está aqui
ponto de chegada
na atribulada imaginação do espaço

IV

despovoamento

Vender-te-ão o conforto
a perseverança o brio
como se tivéssemos por fito
a acumulação do tempo
sem o fruirmos boca a boca
desesperadamente
garantir o futuro dir-te-ão
sem repararem na estupidez do repto
pois que poder temos nós
sobre as válvulas biológicas
do nosso prazo
para nos arrogarmos a garantir
o que quer que seja
quanto mais o sumo fruto da inexistência
esse futuro-cano-enfiado-na-boca
para ser disparado sem falta
de manhã e ao deitar

Em volta sucedem-se clarões
e abismos inóspitos
os elementos torcem-se na pesca à linha
dos lugares fundamentais
há uma convulsão de panoramas
para o brevíssimo turismo
dos olhos
mas o importante é a matemática mesquinha
do sangue que furtamos uns aos outros
a medalha de carne pútrida
com que esperamos aparecer
na fotografia da época

Que se foda a época
digo-te já
que se foda a sépia dos futuros
eu quero aparecer no dia
do teu nascimento
desarmado como uma árvore
sem outra missão que não
amparar-te o susto
e dizer-te baixinho
bem-vindo ao continente dos frágeis
podes parar de nadar.

Funeral Blues

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message ‘He is Dead’.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my

 Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Leaving the Island

Steven Michael

It must have been
the slant of the light,
the sheer cross-grain of rain
against the summer sun,
the way the island appeared
gifted, out of the gleam
and the depth of distance,
so that when you turned
to look again,
the scend of the sea
had carried you on,
under the headland
and into the waiting harbour.

And after the pilgrim lanes,
and the ruined chapel,
the lads singing beneath the window,
and the Corn-Crake calling from
a corner of a field,
after the gull cries and the sea-hush
at the back of the island,
it was the way, standing still
or looking out,
walking or even talking
with others in the evening bar,
holding your drink
and laughing with the rest,
that you realized–part of you
had already dropped to its knees,
to pray, to sing, to look–
to fall in love with everything
and everyone again, that someone
from deep inside you had come out
into the sea-light to raise its hands
and forgive everyone in your short life
you thought you hadn’t, and that all along
you had been singing your quiet way
through the rosary of silence
that held their names.

Above all, the way afterwards,
you thought you had left the island
but hadn’t, the way you knew
you had gone somewhere
into the shimmering light
and come out again on the tide
as you knew you had to,
as someone who would return
and live in the world again,
a man granted just a glimpse,
a woman granted just a glimpse,
some one half a shade braver,
a standing silhouette in the stern,
holding the rail,
riding the long waves back,
ready for the exile we call a home.

Santiago

Freepik

The road seen, then not seen, the hillside
hiding then revealing the way you should take,
the road dropping away from you as if leaving you
to walk on thin air, then catching you, holding you up,
when you thought you would fall,
and the way forward always in the end
the way that you followed, the way that carried you
into your future, that brought you to this place,
no matter that it sometimes took your promise from you,
no matter that it had to break your heart along the way:
the sense of having walked from far inside yourself
out into the revelation, to have risked yourself
for something that seemed to stand both inside you
and far beyond you, that called you back
to the only road in the end you could follow, walking
as you did, in your rags of love and speaking in the voice
that by night became a prayer for safe arrival,
so that one day you realized that what you wanted
had already happened long ago and in the dwelling place
you had lived in before you began,
and that every step along the way, you had carried
the heart and the mind and the promise
that first set you off and drew you on and that you were
more marvelous in your simple wish to find a way
than the gilded roofs of any destination you could reach:
as if, all along, you had thought the end point might be a city
with golden towers, and cheering crowds,
and turning the corner at what you thought was the end
of the road, you found just a simple reflection,
and a clear revelation beneath the face looking back
and beneath it another invitation, all in one glimpse:
like a person and a place you had sought forever,
like a broad field of freedom that beckoned you beyond;
like another life, and the road still stretching on.
