Avoidance

Maria-Theodora Andrikopoulou

Avoidance is my game.
It is not a result of shame or blame
Only my name,
That keeps me away
From you.
Avoidance is my dance.
So we can change our stance, twirl, and prance
And from the side sneak a breathtaking
Glance.
Avoidance is my treat.
Succulent and delicious and sweet
Perfection of perfection,
That is what makes me
Elite.
Avoidance is my pride.
My joy, my happiness, oh how many times have I lied?
There are rules, I must not tell,
Only abide.
Avoidance is my downfall.
I twist and turn and crawl
To your feet, I only stall
What is in store for me after all.
Avoidance.
And when it comes to an end,
The game, the dance, the hatred,
All feigned to hide truth,
I bet life on death and all sacred above,
That we two children,
Are undeniably,
In love.

Busy

Sara Kazemi

I am busy, so busy
I don’t have time to think
I am busy, so busy
So close to the brink

I am busy, so busy
I can’t face the demons inside
I am busy, so busy
So I can allow them to hide

I am busy, so busy
Just keeping up with life
I am busy, so busy
Trying to keep out of strife

I am busy, so busy
That’s why I don’t call
I am busy, so busy
So close to a fall

I am busy, so busy
There is no time for sleep
I am busy, so busy
That’s why I say bleep

I am busy, so busy
Please be kind whilst I am away
I am busy, so busy
It’s me, not you, who cannot stay

I can’t be controlled
But I am in a rut
You can’t make suggestions
I will just say ‘but’

So please be kind
Let me speak my mind
And one day I will reveal
What I can no longer conceal

The loss, the pain,
the grief from the past
The sadness, the despair,
the disappointments that last
I need your love
Your listening ear
Your kindest words
Some jolly good cheer

I just need somewhere safe
To deal with this stuff
I don’t want to fear
An unfortunate rebuff

When I find it within
Or through people who tune in
I will start to heal
And begin to be real

I might slow down
Or completely stop
For a moment
A month or even longer

I hope it doesn’t take a major disaster
To get off this train that keeps going faster
For my heart truly knows that it is just an excuse
To avoid slowing down and making a truce

To once and for all
Forgive and grieve
Everything unresolved
That is hidden in me

Little by little
I can change my pace
And find new ways
To enjoy my own space

Then I won’t be so busy
And I will have time to think
To plan what to do
Without turning pink

Harmony will return
As I find a new rhythm
With stops and starts
On my very own mission

Then one day I will look back
On my busy phase
And wonder why
I wasted so many days

Chasing, pushing, fighting, sighing
Tired, lonely and nearly crying
It’s time to stop being so busy
And live a life that’s much more cruisy!

There is no need to be perfect
Or wait until when
Live life right now
The door is open…

Accept those tears
And face those fears
Take a quick look around
To find what you have already found

The Busyness of Life

Sergey Kichigin

We are too busy in the moving bus that we forget our bus stop
We are too busy in the moving train that we forget our train station
We are too busy to find happiness that we leave it behind our shadows
We are too busy to find freedom that we find the freedom in boxes
We are too busy to fly that we leave our compass
We are too busy on the journey that we forget our destiny
This busyness has left us all in the ocean of complexities
All on a journey of no return
It only takes greater will to find the anchors of hope.

Leisure

 Laura Martinez

WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?—

No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows:

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night:

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

On Quitting

glam

How much grit do you think you’ve got?
Can you quit a thing that you like a lot?
You may talk of pluck; it’s an easy word,
And where’er you go it is often heard;
But can you tell to a jot or guess
Just how much courage you now possess?

You may stand to trouble and keep your grin,
But have you tackled self-discipline?
Have you ever issued commands to you
To quit the things that you like to do,
And then, when tempted and sorely swayed,
Those rigid orders have you obeyed?

Don’t boast of your grit till you’ve tried it out,
Nor prate to men of your courage stout,
For it’s easy enough to retain a grin
In the face of a fight there’s a chance to win,
But the sort of grit that is good to own
Is the stuff you need when you’re all alone.

How much grit do you think you’ve got?
Can you turn from joys that you like a lot?
Have you ever tested yourself to know
How far with yourself your will can go?
If you want to know if you have grit,
Just pick out a joy that you like, and quit.

It’s bully sport and it’s open fight;
It will keep you busy both day and night;
For the toughest kind of a game you’ll find
Is to make your body obey your mind.
And you never will know what is meant by grit
Unless there’s something you’ve tried to quit.

What Life Should Be

Sarah Treanor

To learn while still a child
What this life is meant to be.
To know it goes beyond myself,
It’s so much more than me.

To overcome the tragedies,
To survive the hardest times.
To face those moments filled with pain,
And still, manage to be kind.

To fight for those who can’t themselves,
To always share my light.
With those who wander in the dark,
To love with all my might.

To still stand up with courage,
Though standing on my own.
To still get up and face each day,
Even when I feel alone.

To try to understand the ones
That no one cares to know.
And make them feel some value
When the world has let them go.

To be an anchor, strong and true,
That person loyal to the end.
To be a constant source of hope
To my family and my friends.

To live a life of decency,
To share my heart and soul.
To always say I’m sorry
When I’ve harmed both friend and foe.

To be proud of whom I’ve tried to be,
And this life I chose to live.
To make the most of every day
By giving all I have to give.

To me, that’s what this life should be,
To me, that’s what it’s for.
To take what God has given me
And make it so much more
To live a life that matters,
To be someone of great worth.
To love and be loved in return
And make my mark on Earth.

Poppies

Santiaga

The poppies send up their
orange flares; swaying
in the wind, their congregations
are a levitation

of bright dust, of thin
and lacy leaves.
There isn’t a place
in this world that doesn’t

sooner or later drown
in the indigos of darkness,
but now, for a while,
the roughage

shines like a miracle
as it floats above everything
with its yellow hair.
Of course nothing stops the cold,

black, curved blade
from hooking forward—
of course
loss is the great lesson.

But I also say this: that light
is an invitation
to happiness,
and that happiness,

when it’s done right,
is a kind of holiness,
palpable and redemptive.
Inside the bright fields,

touched by their rough and spongy gold,
I am washed and washed
in the river
of earthly delight—

and what are you going to do—
what can you do
about it—
deep, blue night?

There Are Birds Here

Herb Bailey

There are birds here,
so many birds here
is what I was trying to say
when they said those birds were metaphors
for what is trapped
between buildings
and buildings. No.
The birds are here
to root around for bread
the girl’s hands tear
and toss like confetti. No,
I don’t mean the bread is torn like cotton,
I said confetti, and no
not the confetti
a tank can make of a building.
I mean the confetti
a boy can’t stop smiling about
and no his smile isn’t much
like a skeleton at all. And no
his neighborhood is not like a war zone.
I am trying to say
his neighborhood
is as tattered and feathered
as anything else,
as shadow pierced by sun
and light parted
by shadow-dance as anything else,
but they won’t stop saying
how lovely the ruins,
how ruined the lovely
children must be in that birdless city.

The Bat

Nichole Sobecki

Sleek, faery creature,
Strange freak of Nature
That through the twilight comes and goes,
Could we the mystery
Of thy life's history
Resolve, and learn what no man knows,
From what weird forces,
What hidden sources,
Thy winged soul sprang into being
Then might we clearly
Divine more nearly
The world that lies beyond our seeing.

Quaint, mimic angel!
Thy new evangel
Disclose, and share it now with me,
While through the gloaming
Thus lightly roaming,
Thou flittest round this old oak tree;
Tell me what Ages,
What Cosmic stages,
Evolved thy Spirit in the Past;
The far stars glisten,—
Speak, for I listen;
Teach me the Wisdom that thou hast.

Nay, spectral flitter,
Where glow-worms glitter,
Thou art more silent than the sphinx;
Through eras ended
Thou hast descended
Down from the sphere of 'missing links',—
Like pterodactyl
Thy race runs back till
The distance foils our dazèd sight,
To prehistoric,
Rude, allegoric,
Brute offspring of the Infinite.

The Past hath vanished,
From memory banished,
What of the Future canst thou tell?
In words aesthetic,
Sage and prophetic,
Our doubting and our fears dispel;
When life is over
Shall Darkness cover
Thy twilight wanderings with the Night,—
Or from Death's portal
Wilt thou immortal
Speed forth into the realm of light?

Mute mystic rover!
Could we discover
Thy wisdom though thou answer'st not,
There is no human,
Or man or woman,
But hath the knowledge thou hast got;
We know we know not!
The gods bestow not
On thee a wider, clearer view;—
Thou art surrounded,
On all sides bounded,
By thine own ignorance,—adieu!

Cowardice in Power

Fatih Berat Örer

A figure of authority, a mask of might
Hides behind a title, and a coward’s fright
Shouting at the innocent, with a voice so bold
But trembles at the thought, of facing the truth to be told

Their words are laced with venom, their actions cold as stone
Leaving scars that linger, long after the moment’s gone
But I see through the façade, the fear that they conceal
A coward’s heart beats weakly, beneath their pompous reveal

I refuse to sign, the papers of shame
I’ll stand up to the bully, and play the coward’s game
You threaten me with dismissal, with a voice so loud and clear
But I’ll take my stand, and show you what courage looks like, my dear

I’ll face the man who’s holding my pay
And demand the truth, in a voice that’s clear and gray
You may try to fire me, but I’ll not be tamed
For I know that courage, is not just a word, but a flame

That burns within my soul, a fire that never fades
Guiding me through darkness, and the coward’s charades
I’ll not be silenced, I’ll not be swayed
For I know that truth and justice, will find their way

You may have power, but I have a voice
A voice that speaks for justice, and a righteous choice
I’ll use it to confront, the coward’s disguise
And bring to light, the truth that they’ve denied

The coward’s mask will crack, the truth will be revealed
And those who stood up tall, will be the ones who are healed
Their courage will inspire, and their hearts will be free
And the world will be a better place, for all humanity.

Saying no

archillect

Nobody likes to hear it,
‘no’ is not it, but ‘yes’ is their favorite,
Though a two-letter word,
It has more power than what I’ve heard,

I’m made into a bad person even though I’m not,
I’m then made into a liar right on the spot,
Because, I then say ‘yes’ to change the plot,
Hoping then after they will say ‘I forgot’,

They actually never will forget,
For it was what they wanted to hear,
Then I’m faced with great regret,
For from this siege, I want to disappear,
Situations like these don’t ever seem to end,
But only seems to happen over and over again,

I’ve learnt that it’s better to say ‘no’ than yes,
That way I wouldn’t have to be settling for less,
Terminating all wills and contracts of relationships,
Learning to say no to family, lovers and friends without having to feel like a witch,
Because one day they’ll all have to know,
That very deep down in my heart I actually wanted to say ‘no’.

Ego

SetareRzb/Pexels

 I just didn’t get it—
even with the teacher holding an orange (the earth) in one hand
and a lemon (the moon) in the other,
her favorite student (the sun) standing behind her with a flashlight.
I just couldn’t grasp it—
this whole citrus universe, these bumpy planets revolving so slowly
no one could even see themselves moving.
I used to think if I could only concentrate hard enough
I could be the one person to feel what no one else could,
sense a small tug from the ground, a sky shift, the earth changing gears.
Even though I was only one mini-speck on a speck,
even though I was merely a pinprick in one goosebump on the orange,
I was sure then I was the most specially perceptive, perceptively sensitive.
I was sure then my mother was the only mother to snap,
“The world doesn’t revolve around you!”
The earth was fragile and mostly water,
just the way the orange was mostly water if you peeled it,
just the way I was mostly water if you peeled me.
Looking back on that third grade science demonstration,
I can understand why some people gave up on fame or religion or cures—
especially people who have an understanding
of the excruciating crawl of the world,
who have a well-developed sense of spatial reasoning
and the tininess that it is to be one of us.
But not me—even now I wouldn’t mind being god, the force
who spins the planets the way I spin a globe, a basketball, a yoyo.
I wouldn’t mind being that teacher who chooses the fruit,
or that favorite kid who gives the moon its glow.

'The Lordly Rape'

Farah Siddiquie

And then I was raped…
Trust is where it all started,
Giving way to his rains of emotions.
Drinking a glass of entertainment;
He promised me ‘love’.
Barely being the medicine to overcome all my pains,
He intrigued.
Just as the distance between glowing coals.
Closest when he came, I sensed the uncertainty was about to happen.
He smelled me, the animal in him was very new.
I reacted to his abnormality.
He shut my lips kissing me hard.
That’s not how the first kiss should be.
With his hands behind my head and corpulent body pushed against me.
Dry lips, chapped skin, bruised kiss, dry love
He was so sure, so confident and so distinct.
That his loathing eyes discovered me in full.
His tampering hands pounced my bust harder than ever,
His claws were like birds of prey
As if I was the last piece of his bread, and he didn’t want to delay.
The perpetrator parted my legs and came in
Cold blood ran through my spine
Mourning with élan,
I was unable to protest against ‘the animal’ in him.
While he was busy taking the flavour of my cream
It was my first time and he dug me deep
Wondering how rigorous lethal uncouth one could be
Forgetting his ambit.
I wished I could give a loud scream
But my hands were tied,
Honestly, I couldn’t move my legs.
Only I was able to feel the blood clots
And him kissing me tip to toe, licking me everywhere,
Without missing the opportunity he wrapped me like a silk cover,
Played me like a toy;
Ignoring the convoluted look on my face, he went on exploring me
Enjoying every push in between my legs
The need of his body seemed to reach the aisle.
I squirmed against the hegemonic animal
He knew not what ‘love’ was all about,
By then he was all a pernicious lynch.
Mastering the flame of hope I wished to tame the world, ‘the beauty of love’;
So that they would not have despoiled to gain
But sure enough, I never wanted to be loved like this.
Neither the pleasure could defeat the pain.
All I was left with was a sore breast, an eaten clitoris.
And myself in the bed lain.
That night, I looked up to the sky
With sad eyes,
The sky seemed so tragically beautiful.
Quilted memories, half-swallowed truth, prolonged journey, sullen songs
Some bitter, corroded, tasteless stories
Plunged into my head.
I talked to myself, “I must learn to live without tears.
I must not complain.
I must find my own strength to bear this alone.
We are cultured and civilised.”
I smiled at the moon and murmured, “Life is beautiful”.

Sugar coated words

Aung Myo

Some days I welcome the frost in the mirror,

too unbreakable to reflect crystal thoughts,

Stones rattling for each word thrown in discarded arrogance,

Barely skimming the surface as I casually toss them aside.

Some days I am on the run,

A fake criminal with no record, only the sentence has already been given,

Judge and jury lining up one by one

Ready to hurtle sugar coated undertones of narrative, silent accusations.

However far away I am sent,

Through the raging underbelly of a swirling mist or banished to the darkest corners,

I still exist

I am ready.

I have survived!

In Good Time...

IGNANT

Life can seem an endless maze,
The twists and turns, lulls and delays,
But things always fall into place...
In good time.

Friends will sometimes go away.
Some may disappoint or others betray,
But new ones will come to stay...
In good time.

The hurt of getting something wrong,
And the lesson it often brings along
Are there, you see, to make you strong...
In good time.

Kindness freely given away,
Unnoticed now, will somehow find its way
Back to you and come to stay...
In good time.

Efforts seem not to pay to plan?
Forge on friend, doing the best you can.
Fortune will find the deserving man...
In good time.

Life can be tough, there's no doubt,
But hope is the thing we can't do without.
Right things with joy will come about...
In good time.

The emptiness inside

Pexels

Why, why, why do I feel so empty?

With emotions overwhelming me, emotions I cannot even express to either myself or people outside of myself…

Shouldn’t I be already past this? Shouldn’t I just accept my own emptiness and my difficulty with describing my own emotions already as a part of who I am?

Pray tell, dear brain that is an intimate friend, ally and enemy… Why must you still insist on continuing to fight me? Why must you still insist on trying to instill the same bullshit about me that I’ve ingrained by shitheads that only live in my past? Why the fuck are you just as stubborn as I am?!

What must I emotionally need to do to ensure that you’re feeling loved instead of thinking impossible/illogical things that make you feel worse about yourself,
while you feel so pained, trying and struggling to heal and survive, from yesteryear’s bullshit?

How much bullshit must I take to ensure that you survive? But for what cost on my already fluctuating and fluid mental health?

Fuck it, time to fight my way through life’s bullshit and haul ass to free myself from this hell I made for myself… especially an inescapable self-hatred I need to keep clawing my way out of.

My wings still work and they’re thankfully not clipped, but they’re going to need years to rest, while my claws are available to me, because my claws are still working well so that I can use to continue fighting against the bullshit I subconsciously believe about myself (or rather what was taught to me).

Sometimes it feels like I am not actually getting myself anywhere nor actually making myself a lot better since it’s like I don’t actually care about myself, but more so still trapping myself in the bullshit made about me, and the shit that I made myself believe to make myself palatable to those who’ve wronged me in the past and to those who’ve said a lot of bullshit against me. But then again… doesn’t this feel like that when you’re progressing?

I guess that this is a part of both life and the messy bullshit that is the human experience, no matter how ‘holistic’ people make progress in self-work to be.

I guess there are many things that I can do,

to fill the emptiness inside.

Narcissist

MillaF / Shutterstock

I loved the narcissist
The object of selfish beauty
Engulfed so deeply in herself
No suitors did she see.

I loved the narcissist
But no lovers did she meet
Engulfed so deeply in herself
through the mirror could she see?

I loved the narcissist
The way her beauty gleams
Engulfed so deeply in herself
she was too blinded to see.

I loved the narcissist
her eyes so vague and deep
Engulfed so deeply in herself
The narcissist was me.

The Awakening

Anastasia Tsyoh

There comes a time in life when you finally get it...when in the midst of all the fear and insanity, you stop dead on your tracks….and somewhere inside your head a voice cries out, ENOUGH! Enough fighting and crying…or struggling, to hold on. And like a child quieting down after a blind tantrum, your sobs begin to subside. You shudder once or twice, you blink back a few tears and through a mantle of wet lashes, you begin to look at the world with new eyes.

This, is your awakening!

You realize that it is time to stop hoping and waiting for something to magically change or for happiness, safety and security, to come galloping like a wild horse over the next horizon. You come to terms with the fact that there is no Prince Charming or Cinderella…and that in the real world, there aren't always fairy tale endings, or beginnings for that matter. You realize that any "happily ever after" MUST begin with you….and with this, a sense of serenity is born of acceptance.

You awaken to the fact that you are not perfect and that not everyone will always love, approve or appreciate who or what you are….and that, is OK (everyone is entitled to their own views and opinions). Thus, you learn the value of loving and championing yourself and with this, a sense of new-found confidence is born, of self-approval.

You stop complaining and blaming other people for things they did to you (or did not do for you) and you learn that the only thing you can really count on, is the unexpected. You realize that people don't always say what they mean, or mean what they say…and that not everyone will always be there for you….and that it is not always, about you. As a result, you learn to stand on your own and to take care of yourself. And with this, a sense of safety and security is born, from self-reliance.

You also stop judging and pointing fingers…because you begin to accept people as they are; overlooking their shortcomings or human frailties. In the process, a sense of peace and contentment is born of forgiveness…for others and more importantly, for yourself.

You begin to see that much of the way that you’ve viewed yourself and the world around you, is a result of misleading messages and opinions which have engrained in your psyche. Therefore, you start to sift through emotional debris, created by what has been fed to you for years; about what you should believe, how you should look, how you should live, what career you should strive for, who you should marry, what you should expect of marriage, the meaning of having or not having children…or why you should or should not live up to your family’s expectations.

You begin to open up to new possibilities…new worlds and different points of views; assessing and redefining who you really are and what you truly stand for. You learn the difference between wanting and needing…you start to discard useless doctrines, which you’ve now outgrown; some which you should have never bought into, to begin with. You learn it is in giving that one truly receives. You discover there’s power in creating and contributing…so you stop maneuvering through life as a mere “consumer” just looking for the next fix.

Surely, you learn that principles such as honesty and integrity are not just some outdated ideals of a bygone era….but rather, like key ingredients in a mortar; the foundation upon which you should build a life. You begin to understand that you don’t know everything; as it is not your job to save the world….and that you can’t teach a pig to sing. The difference between guilt and responsibility becomes crystal clear…and you learn how important it is to set boundaries and the freedom, of saying NO. You realize the only cross to bear, is the one you choose to carry…as martyrs too, get burned at the stake.

You also learn about LOVE. Familial, friendship and romantic love…and how to love. How much to give, when to hold back, and when to walk away. You learn not to impose or force things in a relationship. With this, you stop projecting expectations and learn to accept reality; allowing a natural unfolding of what is, instead of what you wish it would be. You begin to understand that you are not more beautiful, more intelligent, more lovable, or more important by being how any person you love, expects you to be. Because, the person holding your hand does not define you. Furthermore, you stop trying to control people, situations and outcomes…and realize that just as people grow and change, so does love. Ultimately, you accept that love does not have to be specific to a popular format, to equal happiness…or for it to have validity, and that being alone does not mean, being lonely.

You look in the mirror and you come to terms with not having the body of an airbrushed model, from a fashion magazine. Therefore, you stop competing with the image in your head and instead, you start to love yourself exactly as you are. You stop agonizing on how to stack up to what others feel is normal or acceptable. Thus, you refrain from putting your feelings aside or ignoring your needs to fit in, or to satisfy others. And you learn that feelings of entitlement when it relates to your life and your happiness, are perfectly OK…you are, entitled to be appreciated….and valued. And sometimes, if you feel trespassed, it is necessary to make demands and to set boundaries, in order to protect yourself.

You understand that you do deserve to be treated with love, kindness, compassion and respect; starting with how you, treat yourself…and not to contemplate anything less. From this point on, only those arms who cherishes you, may hold you….and in this process, you internalized the meaning of self-respect.

You learn that your body, really is your temple. Thus…you begin to take care of it and to treat it with innate respect. You start to eat a balance diet and to hydrate with more water…you take more time to exercise. You learn that fatigue can also weaken the spirit; which could lead to self doubt and anxiety…so you take more time to rest.

And just as food fuels the body…laughter fuels the soul, so you find time to laugh and play. You learn that for the most part, in life you get what you believe you deserve…and that much of life if not all, is a self fulfilling prophecy; so you make an effort to become more optimistic. You learn that anything worth achieving, is worth fighting for. That wishing for something to happen, is different from working toward making it happen…and you find the strength to do the latter.

Most importantly, you learn that to succeed in anything…you need direction, discipline and perseverance. You also learn that no one can do it all alone and that it is ok to ask for help. Consequently, you learn the only thing you should fear in life is the great robber baron of all time; FEAR ITSELF! So you find a way to step right through your fears, because you realize that whatever happens you can handle it. For to give in to fear…is to give up the right to live on your terms.

You learn to fight hard for your life and not to squander, living under a cloud of impending doom. You see life isn’t always fair; you don’t always get what you wish for and sometimes bad things happen to unsuspecting, good people. It is during these moments that you learn not to personalize things. God isn’t punishing you, or failing to answer your prayers. It is life just happening! And you start to recognize evil in its most primal state; the ego…learning how to control it, instead of allowing it, to control you.

You realize that negative feelings such as anger, envy, hate, resentment and sorrow, must all be understood and redirected…or they will suffocate the life out of you…and poison the universe which surrounds you. You learn to admit when you’re wrong and to build bridges instead of walls. You learn about gratitude and to appreciate the comfort of simple things, which many take for granted….things that millions of people on Earth can only dream of: clean running water, a full refrigerator, a comfortable bed to sleep on, a hot shower on a cold day, clean clothes to wear…a place to call home.

Slowly, you start to take responsibility for yourself. You make yourself a promise to never betray yourself again by settling for less than. You hang a wind chime outside a window, so you could listen to the wind; as a gentle reminder to keep trusting, keep smiling…and you make it a point to stay open to every wonderful possibility.

Finally…with courage in your heart and with God by your side…you take a stand. You take a deep breath…and you begin to design the life you want, as best as you can!
